Will Apple throw the book at e-book apps?
Apple’s OS 3.0 preview event has just ended, and brought to light some very interesting new features. There is no shortage of coverage of the event; here is Ars Technica’s recorded liveblog and their post-event wrap-up. Gizmodo offers a “definitive guide” to 3.0’s features.
OS 3.0 will ship this “summer”. (My guess is June, to [...] Continue reading

Kindle for iPhone is now #1 free app in App Store Books category, Stanza #2. B&N/FW alliance possible for Stanza?
The number one free app in the Books category in the iPhone App Store is now Kindle for iPhone, displacing Stanza, according to Readerville. The third most popular choice is Fictionwise’s eReader software.
"If everyone who downloaded the app bought a book to try it out with," Readerville says of Kindle for the iPhone, "Amazon may [...] Continue reading

Fictionwise acquired by Barnes & Noble
Fictionwise has been acquired by Barnes & Noble in a stock deal today.
I spoke with Scott Pendergrast of Fictionwise at 7:20 a.m. EST this morning and he told me that all the Fictionwise sites—Fictionwise, eReader and eBookwise—will continue as they currently exist. Fictionwise will still be managed by its current team as an independent [...] Continue reading
DRM’d Mobipocket: Is the e-text on the wall?
I hope TeleReaders will forgive the preponderance of Kindle stories this morning, but it is a pretty newsworthy event in the e-book world. (And besides, David has made two Kindle posts to my one, and I need to catch up!)
Did you know that the expressions “the writing on the wall” and “days are numbered” [...] Continue reading

E-book-related hardware: $300 Touch Book netbook-tablet. Plus, Onyx Boox’s evil text-to-speech
Netbooks are okay for reading e-books, but tablets would be even better. But what will you type with?
One Laptop Per Child solved that problem with a convertible laptop that you can also fold into a tablet. How about a different approach, though? Suppose you could simply detach the keyboard and kick back and [...] Continue reading

Wired Epicenter on Amazon Kindle vs. open standards
TeleRead, MobileRead, and other e-book advocacy sites and blogs have complained about Kindle’s format lock-in for a long time. Sometimes it seems as if no one has been listening, as other complaints such as the brouhaha over text-to-speech take center field. However, Chris Snyder at Wired’s “Epicenter” blog has taken notice with an excellent [...] Continue reading

I move to a Nokia phone (mainly), but can still do e-books
Editor’s Note: The following was originally published in a slightly different form yesterday on PalmAddicts, another site that I write for. I thought our readers might be interested, especially if they are considering buying an iPhone for e-book reading.
Since (inadvertantly!) taking over TeleRead’s management my phone usage has changed quite a [...] Continue reading

Blackberry Storm shows promise as an e-reader, now that eReader app is on the way
eReader for the Blackberry Storm is in beta, and jkOnTheRun is impressed. Also ahead will be versions for Android, Linux and E Ink (for the Sony Reader, perhaps?). Excerpt:
"I’m enjoying the heck out of it on the Storm. That big screen is nice and I like how you have to click the screen to [...] Continue reading
