Four short links: 19 Feb 2009

Art, astronomy and more fun for you in today’s four short links: Found in Space — there’s an astronomy bot on Flickr that identifies stars in the night sky, and from the unique positions of the stars figures out what bit of the night sky is looked at and then adds notes for interesting parts of the sky visible in… Continue reading

New Zealand Goes Black

The previous government in New Zealand enacted an amendment to the Copyright Act that required ISPs to have a policy to disconnect users after repeated accusations of infringement, over the objections of technologists. While it’s possible to have a policy that requires proof rather than accusation, APRA (the RIAA of New Zealand) strongly opposes any such attempts at reasonable interpretation… Continue reading

Tools of Change twitter visualization

Geeks love raw data, so I couldn’t resist a text dump of all #toc tweets that occurred during the conference.
Here’s the quick visualization I threw together (warning, it loads very slowly):

It skips any images that are broken or any that were listed as having the Twitter default icon. For some reason the raw data [...] Continue reading

Continue reading

Everyone’s New Favorite Question About Twitter

For a while there, you couldn’t surf a single drop of the web without smacking into the question, “How will Twitter make money?” Although that question remains unanswered, Internet interest has shifted. Today’s favorite question about the micromessaging service is: “Has Twitter has gone mainstream?” Or, somewhat less optimistically, “Will Twitter go mainstream?” Of course, the question isn’t new; people… Continue reading

Toys, telegraphs, transparency, and travel in today’s roundup of short interesting links. New Law Could Wipe Out Handcrafted Toy Makers – CNN story on a new consumer safety law that mandates expensive quality tests for components of toys, even those handmade in the US by micro-businesses. It’s not clear what a solution looks like: mass-produced in China or micro-produced in… Continue reading

Today we have Tom’s Brain on Flickr, the Newspaper Industry’s Death in Context, REST with friends, and Filthy Lucre from Twitter. A map of my brain – Tom Coates mindmaps his interests as part of brainstorming for a Webstock talk. I’d love to see these for other geeks. I guess part of keeping up with your friends is building your… Continue reading

Something beautiful, something informative, something mindblowing, something revealing: something for everyone in today’s link set. Trees and Forests on Old Russian Maps – old maps, like old books, are works of art. I loved this collection of symbols; it reminded me how much creativity and beauty we’ve lost (temporarily, I hope) in modern maps. Distinguishing Decorative from Meaningful Elements in… Continue reading

Continue reading

Networked link journalism: A revolution quietly begins in Washington state

The discussion about journalism’s future so often focuses on Big Changes — Kill the print edition! Flips for everyone! Reinvent business models NOW! — that it’s easy to forget how simple innovation can be.
Sometimes all you need is a few Tweets, a bunch of links, and some like-minded pioneers.
That’s how a quiet revolution began in [...] Continue reading
