It has been a busy couple of days for the battle between the forces of copyright and those who would infringe it. Here are three of the most happening stories:
You Can’t Keep a Good Wolverine Down
Or a bad or indifferent one, it would seem. Someone leaked an unfinished work print of the upcoming Wolverine prequel [...] Continue reading

TeleRead has a free e-books area—thanks, Robert Nagle!—and some of the sites listed there might be useful to owners of the Kindle. It can read nonDRMed Mobipocket, an oft-encountered format.
So what about about lists specifically compiled with the Kindle in mind? Check out Free Kindle Books within iReader Review, as well as the Book [...] Continue reading
‘Peter Brantley joins Internet Archive’: Digital Library Federation to fade away, partly due to budget woes?
Here’s an Open Content Alliance blog item by Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle:
I am thrilled to announce that Peter Brantley will be joining the Internet Archive as our newest Director. In this role, he will direct our efforts and help coordinate with partners in building an open library and distributed publishing system.

Wise words on social DRM from book maven Mike Shatzkin
Consultant Mike Shatzkin of Idea Logical is a veteran book guy who sees the whole picture—e-books, p-books, brick-and-mortar stores, you name it, based on his decades in the business.
So I’d hope that Random House, S&&, Hachette and others using traditional DRM would pay special attention to his thoughts on social DRM, which would discourage [...] Continue reading

Moderator’s note: Chris Meadows commented on the Weisberg piece and also the possibility of a larger iPod tablet. Check out Chris’s post—made while I myself was dissecting Weisberg. – D.R.

A pair of articles in different places this week offer looks at different e-book reading solutions of the present or near-future: the popularity of the Kindle, and the possibility of a tablet-sized iPod Touch. But those considering a reading device of any kind may wish to wait and see what comes out o Apple [...] Continue reading

The iPod Touch as an econo e-book reader: Too late for $169 deal, but look for others
Earlier today you could buy a refurbed second-generation 8G iPod Touch handheld from Woot for $169 and $5 shipping, at least in the States. I bought the same model some months ago for around $220.
At $169 the the Touch was a lot cheaper than even used Kindles. Alas, the units sold out [...] Continue reading

Will Apple throw the book at e-book apps?
Apple’s OS 3.0 preview event has just ended, and brought to light some very interesting new features. There is no shortage of coverage of the event; here is Ars Technica’s recorded liveblog and their post-event wrap-up. Gizmodo offers a “definitive guide” to 3.0’s features.
OS 3.0 will ship this “summer”. (My guess is June, to [...] Continue reading
