iPhone/iPod Touch alternative power sources
Recently I discussed my power problems with using my iPhone as an e-book reader. Today I’ll discuss a couple of add-on power sources that I use and have previously reviewed at other websites.
Perhaps the most cost-effective, especially if used with rechargeable batteries, solution is the Turbo Charge, pictured above. The unit sells for [...] Continue reading

Reading devices I have known
A couple of days ago, someone suggested David write a retrospective about the different e-reading devices he had used through the years. It seemed like a marvelous idea to me, and there certainly is room for more than one such article.
So here is mine.
1. Palm IIIe
I had long wanted a Palm Pilot, ever since [...] Continue reading
The iPhone, signal strength and e-books
Many people don’t realize that their cell phone is always transmitting. It is constantly sending out a signal to the surrounding towers saying “I am here”. That’s how a cell tower knows to send a phone call your way. Well, the strength of the signal the phone puts out will vary depending [...] Continue reading

E-book boost: $99 iPhone refurbs from AT&T
Some low-income people are actually gravitating to the iPhone because they can use it for many purposes, not just as a phone.
Perhaps that’s a reason why AT&T is offering $99 refurbs in exchange for two-year wireless sign-ups. They are 8GB 3G models. AT&T’s $99 is quite a price drop from the earlier $150.
Smart move—this [...] Continue reading
Easy-to-learn publishing tool from Feedbooks: Reach Kindles, Sony Readers, iPhones—and help the ePub standard
How easy is it to produce an ePub book—either your own or a public domain work—and spread it around the globe?
This topic is more than just grist for a post. I wanted to give the planet a quick preview of The Solomon Scandals in the standard IDPF format. And, if, along the way, people [...] Continue reading
iPhone Nano rumor update: case now available for purchase
Since the words “box” and “case” are often used interchangeably, it seems appropriate on Boxing Day to update the story about the mysterious iPhone Nano case that a Chinese case manufacturer is selling, well in advance of any iPhone Nano product actually being announced.
Ars Technica has the story that this case can now actually [...] Continue reading
Apple Newton, obsolete? Don’t tell this woman!
Merry Christmas, TeleReaders!
Odd as it might seem, there are some people who would probably not care to find a shiny new iPhone or iPod Touch under their Christmas tree. Even if the rest of the world might consider them obsolete, there is a small but devoted cadre of Apple Newton fans who continue to [...] Continue reading

Death of publishing industry, film at eleven?
Salon Magazine has a cheerful little piece looking at the recent downsizing or dissolution of several major publishing houses. Due to their corporate parentage, many publishers have been hit hard by the recent economic downturn—some parent companies are billions of dollars in debt.
“There were hedge fund guys with no background in publishing buying up [...] Continue reading
NYT: “More readers picking up electronic books”
Found via TechMeme: the New York Times has an article about how “More Readers [are] Picking Up Electronic Books.” Although e-books have been around for ten years and failed to make much of a splash for most of that time, the article notes, this year the Kindle and Sony have both started picking up [...] Continue reading
